The use we make of the personal data we collect

Comments

When you leave a comment on our website, we collect not only the data you enter in the comment form, but also your IP address and the user agent of your browser to help us identify unwelcome comments.

An anonymous string (hashed value) generated from your e-mail address may be forwarded to the Gravatar service to check whether you are using it. The Gravatar confidentiality conditions are available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once validated, your profile picture will be publicly visible next to your comment.

Media

If you are a registered user and upload images to the website, we recommend that you avoid uploading images containing EXIF GPS coordinate data, which may be used by visitors to your own website to extract location data.

Cookies

If you upload a comment to our website, you will be asked to save your name, e-mail address and website in cookie form. This is purely for your own convenience and avoid the need to re-enter the same information if you make further comments at a later time. These cookies expire after one year.

If you have a website account, a temporary cookie will be created every time you log in to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and will be deleted automatically when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set a number of cookies to save your login information and screen preferences. Login cookies have a lifetime of two days, and screen option cookies one year. If you check the ‘Remember me’ box, your login cookie will be retained for two weeks. The login cookie will be deleted when you log out of your account.

Whenever you edit or publish a post, an additional cookie will be stored in your browser. This cookie contains no personal data. It simply indicates the ID of the post you have edited, and expires after one day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this website may include embedded content (videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content originating in other websites behaves exactly as if the visitor were visiting that other website.

Such websites may also collect data about you, use cookies, embed third-party tracking tools and/or track your interactions with such embedded content if you are logged in to an account on that website.

How we use and transmit your personal data

Data storage periods

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This allows subsequent comments to be automatically recognised and approved, rather than joining the moderation queue.

We also store the personal data contained in the user profiles of those users who register on our website (where registration is an option). All users can view, edit or delete their personal information at any time (with the exception of their username). Website administrators can also view and edit this information.

Your personal data rights

If you have a website account or have left comments on the website, you may request a file containing all the personal data we hold about you, including the data you have provided to us. You may also request deletion of your personal data. This will not include data stored for administrative, legal or security purposes.

Transmission of your personal data

Comments uploaded by visitors may be checked using an automated service to detect unwelcome comments.
